Background report · December 2026
A new generation of energy for the Netherlands
The world is changing at a pace we have never seen before. Natural resources are under pressure, ecosystems are shifting and the responsibility for a liveable future rests with all of us. In this background report we describe the development of the Dutch energy transition, the protection of natural resources and the role that Agriculture 5.0 plays in a sustainable society.
Global warming and the urgency of change
The climate of our planet is changing noticeably. Average temperatures are rising, precipitation patterns are becoming unpredictable and sea levels in the low countries demand extra attention. For a country that lies largely below sea level, the protection of dikes, polders and ecosystems is not a side topic but a condition for daily life. The development of clean, renewable energy sources is a central pillar in this effort. The 2030 carbon footprint targets are ambitious: a significant reduction of emissions in industry, mobility and households. That movement does not happen by itself. It requires awareness, education and a clear long-term vision in which the future of coming generations stands first.
The role of the Netherlands in the green energy transition
The Netherlands is systematically building a diverse energy system. Wind farms in the North Sea deliver more and more electricity to the mainland, solar energy is growing both on rooftops and in carefully planned solar fields and hydrogen is taking on a growing role as an energy carrier for heavy industry. This development is supported by strict guidelines on landscape protection, noise and spatial planning. Dutch energy companies collaborate with research institutes and universities to improve storage, smart grids and efficiency. The result is a system in which clean energy is no longer an experiment, but a stable and reliable foundation for housing, work and transport. The future of our infrastructure is green and inclusive.
The future of agriculture — Agriculture 5.0

Agriculture has always been a core part of Dutch identity. In Agriculture 5.0 we connect tradition with responsible innovation: precise irrigation, sensors that monitor soil health and vertical farming in urban environments. Everything is aimed at the protection of water, soil and biodiversity. Farmers gain better insight into what crops need, which leads to less waste and a more stable food supply. By sharing knowledge through open reports and public newsletters, every citizen gets access to trustworthy information on food, energy and climate. This creates a shared foundation where development, protection and education come together in one clear vision: a green, strong and self-aware Netherlands.
The Green Netherlands Vision is not a single campaign. It is an ongoing invitation to citizens, researchers and municipalities to work together on a future in which clean energy, responsible agriculture and careful communication are natural parts of daily life.
